Internationally
performed Mawingo (Ger) is gaining support from Tasmanian breeders for the 2015
breeding season.
Since the Grenville Stud Open Day which was conducted in April, the son of
Tertullian has had a steady stream of Tasmanian and mainland breeders booking
mares for the forthcoming season.
Grenville Stud's, Graeme McCulloch is pleased with the support the horse is
gaining and stated.
"We are lucky to have a stallion of this calibre standing at stud in Tasmania
and gauging by the bookings breeders agree!"
Mawingo is providing a point of difference for the Tasmania thoroughbred
breeding industry with race-day performances at the highest level in three
different countries.
Starting his racing career in Germany, he was a Group 3 winner of the Munich
Classic and placed in the Hamburg Derby at Group 1 level.
After being purchased by Australian Bloodstock as a potential Caulfield Cup
contender, Mawingo was sent to the Anthony Freedman stables where he won first
up over 1600m at Flemington and during the Brisbane Winter Carnival of 2012
showed a great turn of foot bursting through a gap to take out the prestigious Gr.1
Doomben Cup (2000m).
After an interrupted Spring campaign in 2012, Mawingo returned in the Autumn of
2013 and produced his most notable performance. First-up in the Group 1 C.F.
Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield,
Mawingo was an unlucky second behind Black Caviar's younger brother, All Too
Hard.
After the C.F. Orr Stakes, Jockey Craig Williams was quoted as saying "He
showed amazing speed and with any luck at all should have won".
Mawingo ventured across to Singapore into the stables of Anthony's brother
Michael Freedman for a tilt at the 2013 Singapore Airlines International Cup.
Facing off in the strongest field in the history of the Singapore Airlines
International Cup, Mawingo ran a creditable third behind the outstanding Hong
Kong performers Military Attack and Dan Excel.
Mawingo was given one more start after the Singapore Airlines International Cup
with success over 1600m when ridden by the 'magic man' Joao Moreira.
Mawingo's pedigree is one of considerable depth. His sire, the globe-trotting
Tertullian won five Group races in three countries. A son of highly successful
Mr Prospector stallion Miswaki, Tertullian is a ¾ brother to Urban Sea, a
sensation both on the track - winning the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe -
and at stud, producing the champion racehorses and outstanding stallions Sea
The Stars and Galileo.
Mr Prospector line sires have proven successful in Tasmania with outstanding
sires El Moxie, Aliocha, Tough Speed and West Quest all producing prolific winners.
Mawingo's dam, by the legendary Sadler's Wells, hails from one of the world's
great stallion families, that of Sea Hero, Mozart and Roar.
Mawingo will have his first full season at stud in Tasmania and is exceptional
value at $4,440.
