First Stakes Winner for Universal Ruler

Mark Smith - Sunday July 26
The judge appeared to be one of the few people on course that thought Rebel King had arrived in time to defeat Cool Trade in Saturday's Listed HG Bolton Sprint (1200m) at Belmont but that's the only verdict that matters as the son of Universal Ruler credited his sire with his first stakes winner.

Ridden by William Pike for trainer Darren McAuliffe, Rebel King looked to be struggling to pick up Cool Trade who was given every chance by Pat Carbery. It was only in the dive to the line that Rebel King got the stride in to claim victory.

"I thought the mare had beaten us and full credit to her, she ran a terrific race." McAuliffe said.

"Willie Pike in a finish there's no-one better.

"There is probably only two three-year-olds in the state that have won more money than him (this season)

"Full credit to him today and great effort by his sire, Universal Ruler who had a double today, and his first stakes-winner, so we've finished the season with a bang."

Never further back than third in his past seven starts, Rebel King advances his overall record to 6 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds from 14 starts for earnings of $425,325.

In winning the Bolton Sprint, Rebel King emulated the deeds of his sire Universal Ruler, who won the race six years ago when it was rated a Group III.

From the first crop of his sire, Rebel King (pictured as a yearling) was purchased at the 2013 Magic Millions Perth Yearling sale for $40,000 by Oz Racing out of the Scenic Lodge draft.

A half-brother to the Listed winner Rebelson (Snippetson) Rebel King is the third foal of the unraced Falbrav mare Rebel Sister who's dam Sister Theresa (At Talaq) is a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Savannah Success (Success Express) the dam of Champion NZ stallion Savabeel (Zabeel)

Universal Ruler stands at Scenic Lodge Thoroughbred Stud where his 2015 service fee has been set at $6,050, up from $3,850 the previous season.
