the navy colours of global breeding giant Coolmore for the first time, unbeaten
Golden Slipper winner Vancouver impressed trial watchers with a narrow win over
older horses in his first barrier trial after spelling at Randwick on Friday.
The 850-metre trial was held on the Kensington track with Vancouver landing on
speed and fighting back in the straight to hold off Hi World by a half-head in
the time of 50.6 seconds.
"He gives you goosebumps," Berry said. "That's the best he's trialled
without the blinkers on.
"He's just so relaxed and laid back. What I really liked about him today
was the way he pulled away from them inside the final 50 (metres)."
The handsome son of Medaglia D'Oro (USA) won all four starts at two, but has
yet to race beyond 1200 metres.
"He's such a professional colt," Waterhouse said. "I'm happy, happy,
happy.
"I haven't made a decision yet. I will just see how he comes through that
trial and make a decision sometime within the next 10 days."
"The San Domenico is a first-up option, otherwise we'll wait until The Run
To The Rose."
The Group III San Domenico Stakes (1100m) is scheduled for Rosehill on August
15 while the Group II The Run To The Rose (1200m) is at Rosehill two weeks
later.
Vancouver is the current $3 favourite with Sportsbet for the Group I Golden
Rose (1400m) to be held at Rosehill on September 12 and will be seeking to
become the second Golden Slipper winner to capture the race.
Flying Spur filly Forensics achieved the double, but did so in the EI year when
the Golden Rose was run in the autumn and was still a Group II event.
