Champion
trainer Chris Waller was expected to win the opening race at Canterbury on
Wednesday, but not with Devil Hawk, the full brother to his Group I Queensland
Derby winner Hawkspur.
Waller also had hot favourite Metallic Crown engaged, but while that three
year-old failed to quicken as hoped for down the running, his stablemate powered
to the line to win the 1250 metre maiden by two lengths.
It was the first run back from a spell for Devil Hawk, whose previous campaign
of three runs yielded a third placing at Gosford.
"He's still a colt and he knows it, so he can be a bit tricky," Waller said.
"We chose not to geld him last time and he was probably lucky in that regard.
"We'll look to step him up in distance, probably to 1400 metres on a Saturday."
By Purrealist from Mollyhawk, Devil Hawk was retained to race by his breeders,
who also bred and raced his famous older brother Hawkspur, a winner of $1.3
million.
Mollyhawk has a yearling by Purrealist and will foal again to him this spring.
