The decision to send class racemare Abidewithme
to leading Victoria trainer Peter Moody in an attempt to gain valuable
Australian "black-type" credentials looks like paying dividends for Cambridge
Stud supremo Sir Patrick Hogan.
Successful at Group Two level in New Zealand when winning the Travis Stakes at
Te Rapa from the Te Akau Racing barn of trainer Jason Bridgman, the richly bred
daughter of Redoute's Choice made a winning debut for Moody on her new home
track at Caulfield on Saturday.
"We sent her over to Peter to try and give her the best opportunity to win at
stakes level over there to further enhance her future breeding prospects,"
explained Hogan.
"We felt she would be suited to the pattern of racing over there as their
stakes races tend to have smaller fields and are run at a more genuine tempo
that some of our races.
"She is a long-striding mare who gets back in her races which has been to her
disadvantage on a number of occasions here in New Zealand where they tend to
slacken the pace and sprint home which just doesn't suit her.
"On Saturday she struck the perfect race and delivered accordingly which was a
real thrill for us."
Hogan was pleased to send the mare to Moody to reflect on the faith he has
shown in the Cambridge Stud product when buying at the annual Karaka Yearling
Sales.
"Peter has been a good supporter of both our stud and a number of local
breeders over the years at Karaka and I was pleased to be able to reciprocate that
by sending him the mare," he said.
"On Saturday's performance I think she can be very competitive at a higher
level so I'm looking forward to where Peter will set her for next."
Hogan also featured prominently at Ruakaka on Saturday where he received an
immediate return on a recent investment in exciting Tavistock gelding Hasselhoof
who made it three wins from three starts with another dominant performance.
Hogan and several other prominent players in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Industry
purchased a share in Hasselhoof in order to secure his racing future in
Australasia after several large offers were received from international
interests.
"This horse is a great advertisement for his sire Tavistock and we felt it was
important for his stud career to have this horse racing in his major local
markets," he said.
"He is an exciting staying prospect so I'm looking forward to seeing how much
further he can go from here."
Hogan finished off his day with another breeding and ownership success as
