Spring Stakes to Hawkspur Brother

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 18
Champion trainer Chris Waller was expected to win the Group III Newcastle Spring Stakes on Friday with promising colt Wudang Mountain, but while the son of Big Brown (USA) went missing in action, his stablemate Devil Hawk stepped up to take the spoils.

Devil HawkA full brother to Group I Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur, Devil Hawk broke his maiden at Canterbury last month and relished the step up to 1600 metres for this assignment.

Easy in the market, the flashy chestnut came with a late rush to win by a head and looks like to be right on target for a tilt at the Group I ATC Spring Champion Stakes.

By Purrealist from Mollyhawk, Devil Hawk (pictured Steve Hart) was retained to race by his breeders, who also bred and raced his famous older brother Hawkspur, a winner of $1.3 million.

Mollyhawk has a yearling by Purrealist and will foal again to him this spring.

Devil Hawk is the fourth stakes-winner for Purrealist, who stands at Chatswood Stud at a fee of $5,500.
