One to Watch - Bendigo

Tara Madgwick - Thursday October 1
Laurence Eales enjoyed the ultimate high in racing when winning the 2009 Melbourne Cup with high class Street Cry (IRE) stallion Shocking and it was one of his offspring that had him back in the winner's circle at Bendigo on Thursday.

Battlecamp as a yearlingPrepared by Lee and Anthony Freedman, three year-old gelding Battlecamp kicked off his career with a dominant three and a half length win in the 1300 metre maiden as a short priced favourite.

Entered for the Group I VRC Victoria Derby on October 31, Battlecamp is in the right stable to get him there if he's good enough.

A $60,000 NZB Select Sale purchase from the draft of Rich Hill Stud, which is also home to his sire Shocking, Battlecamp is owned outright by Eales Racing and carries the same colours as did his sire.

Battlecamp is the second winner for Red Ransom (USA) mare Zelt, who won twice at 2000 and 2100 metres and is from a three-quarter sister to Dame Clair, who won the Listed VRC Andrew Ramsden Stakes at 3200 metres.

Further back it's the family of Group I stars such as Cape Verdi and Aquarelliste, so the pedigree certainly fits with Derby aspirations.

Battlecamp is the fourth winner for Shocking, whose oldest progeny are three year-olds.
