Ones to Watch – Beneteau

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday October 7
Ill-fated Beneteau had two winners on Wednesday – one on each side of the country – and both would have stakes goals in mind.

Winner of the Inglis 2YO Classic earlier this year, the Jeff Englebrecht trained filly Lady Jivago overcame a wide gate and a big weight to win at Canterbury on Wednesday.

With four wins from six starts and prizemoney topping $243,000, Lady Jivago may be given her chance to chase more Black Type in Saturday week's Listed ATC Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

"She's got plenty of talent, she's still immature though so that's why we've been going steady with her," Englebrecht said.

"It looked hard, with the weight she had and the draw. We were wondering where she was going to end up and what she was going to do but she hits the line with plenty of gusto so we might have to get a bit more ambitious.

"We have talked about the Brian Crowley (Stakes). It's only a week and a half away but she's pretty fit so we'll see how she is in the next couple of days."

BeneteauA $14,000 Inglis Classic Winter Book purchase from the Luskin Park draft, Lady Jivago has a pedigree despite her modest yearling price being from Hussterics, who comes from the Singles Bar branch of the Easy Date family featuring brilliant speedsters Not a Single Doubt and Zizou.

Beneteau also featured in the West where talented three year-old gelding Universal Law made it two wins in as many starts when scoring over 1200 metres as a short priced favourite at Belmont.

A homebred for Bob and Sandra Peters, he is a half-brother to their superstar filly Delicacy and looks more than capable of earning some Black Type of his own this season.

The final crop of two year-olds by Beneteau will race this season.
