Chautauqua’s little bro creates an impression in first trial

Clinton Payne - Tuesday November 10

Radradra, the half-brother to champion sprinter Chautauqua, turned heads when producing an impressive performance to win his first barrier trial at Rosehill on Tuesday.

A three-year-old son of Street Sense, Radradra was stepping out publically for the first time and the gelding looked the part when winning the last of 17 trials on the inside grass in a respectable 53.90 seconds.

Radradra flew out of the barriers and within a few strides held a half-length advantage with jockey Jay Ford keeping his mount under tight rein. Shortly after Rodradra strolled across the face of the field to take up the running with his ears pricked.

On straightening the leggy specimen held a one length advantage but when allowed to stride inside the last 200m he extended his break with every stride to record a 2-1/2 length trial win.

"He's a nice horse but he's not there yet and will probably go to the paddock," Michael Hawkes, who trains Radradra in partnership with his father John and brother Wayne said.

"The best way to describe him is he's a two-year-old in a three-year-old's body.

"He's obviously got a motor but we'll be patient and kind and let him do it himself."

A son of Lovely Jubly, Radradra is raced by his breeders, members of the Throsby family, and is bay in colour.
