Star Mares Headed to Japan

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 1
A look at the named horses heading to various destinations overseas on the always informative Australian Studbook website often reveals some interesting departures with some high profile mares exiting our shores for Japan this year.

DriefonteinHeading the list are Group I winners Alinghi, Alverta and Driefontein, who was sold by her Star Thoroughbreds group of owners to Shadai Farm earlier this year in a well-publicized sale.

Waratah Thoroughbreds also said goodbye to their US bred Group I winner Miss World (USA), who leaves a Pierro yearling filly to continue her line.

Lankan Rupee's full sister Charming Estelle was also listed along with stakes-winning Encosta de Lago mare Lucky Raquie, a member of the famed Shantha's Choice clan that has delivered superstars such as Redoute's Choice and Manhattan Rain.

Rounding out the group are blue-blooded Group III winner Star Fashion and stakes-winning Savabeel mare You're So Good.

Japan is now home to a good many former star mares including the likes of Mosheen, Shamrocker King's Rose and Southern Speed, so it will be interesting to follow their progress in years to come.

Maybe we'll see the day when a Japanese raider arrives for one of our Group I features bred from one of 'our girls'…. now that's something I'd like to see!
