Sire Profitability at Magic Millions

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 13
The dust has now settled on a hugely successful 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and we all know who were the leading sires by average, but who were the most profitable in terms of returns for their breeder/vendor?.

I Am InvincibleOn a straight multiple of service fee to average on sires with three or more sold, Yarraman Park's I Am Invincible was comfortably in front returning 18.8 times his 2013 service fee of $11,000, his 19 yearlings averaging $207,105.

It's the third year in a row that the young stallion has topped this category and reflects the growing respect that is held for the good looking son of champion European sire Invincible Spirit, whose dual Group I winning son Brazen Beau is a popular member of the Darley Victoria roster.

I Am Invincible had a fee rise last year to $55,000 and covered nearly 200 mares, so is still on an upswing as his better pedigreed yearlings come on line down the track.

He has the type nailed and in a few short years, his stock will have the page to go with it!

Next on the list returning 15.4 times service fee was Newhaven Park's dual Group I winning Encosta de Lago son Delago Deluxe, who produced some outstanding types that many buyers felt were reminiscent of the stock of Northern Meteor.

That's a big call and time will tell the answer there, but you can't deny it's been a most encouraging start and we might be seeing the start of something exciting as we did when I Am Invincible kicked off with his first yearlings in 2013.

Note: Profit is the average price, minus the 2013 service fee and a notional $20,000 for production costs.

In a booming market such as we saw at the Gold Coast, the majority of sires returned the 'three times fee' that breeders in theory would like to see, but sometimes it's not as cut and dried as that with stallions off a bigger fee actually returning an impressive profit as we see in the table below.

Arrowfield Stud's Snitzel was the big winner along with Darley's Exceed and Excel, while Coolmore heavy hitter Fastnet Rock was a notable omission in the Top 20 as his yearlings this year were conceived from a $275,000 fee making it hard going for some breeders offering his stock.

The good ones are still big ticket items as we saw with the $1million Ten Carat Rock filly, but anything in the bottom half of his draft is unlikely to cover costs.

Pierro (Coolmore) and All Too Hard (Vinery) were feted by some of the best breeders in the country in their debut seasons at stud and the investment in a big service fee for a freshman sire looks to have been a good one judging by the profits involved.
