Wind issues may prevent well-bred
Mastercraftsman (IRE) mare Flavigny from realising her full potential, but they
didn't stop her from accomplishing a satisfying first Black Type victory at Tauherenikau
on Monday.
The Mike Moroney and Chad Ormsby-trained four-year-old boosted her future value
with victory in the Listed WRC/Pope & Gray Contractors Thoroughbred
Breeders' Stakes over 1600 metres.
"She's been working out of her skin and she's always showed a lot of ability,
but she's had two wind operations," Ballymore Stables' racing manager Nick Fairweather
said.
"She has been relaxing a lot better and she has matured both physically and
mentally."
Raced by her co-breeders Windsor Park Stud, Flavigny had finished fourth last
time out in the Group III Anniversary Handicap at Trentham, so was deserving of
her first stakes success.
"Our main job was to get black type with her so it's a great result for the
Schick family," Fairweather said.
"She's been up for a while now so Mike and Chad may give her a break – we'll assess
that when she gets home."
Flavigny is the best of two winners from imported Point Given mare Sharp Point,
a daughter of Group I placed stakes-winner Jibe from the family of Group I
winners Commander in Chief, Warning, Yashmak and Full Warning.
She is the 26th stakes-winner worldwide for Danehill Dancer's sire
son Mastercaftsman, who shuttled to Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand.
