Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 8
Group I stars were in action at Warwick Farm on Monday morning with trial wins for Catkins, Terravista and a fast closing second for Exosphere, but six juvenile trials held plenty of interest with a pipe opener for leading Golden Slipper fancy Astern, while a Hinchinbrook filly showed speed to burn.

Astern is ready to pick up where he left off Godolphin's Medaglia D'Oro (USA) colt Astern looked good winning on debut at Randwick on December 5 and showed with this trial he is on track for a Slipper campaign.

Looking a bit burly from his summer holiday, he jumped smartly from an outside gate and travelled forward to lead on the bit for James McDonald.

He ambled to the line to win his 800 metre heat by two lengths under a hold in 47.90 seconds.

A half-brother to stakes-placed Mogador from the family of champion filly Triscay, Astern is what the Darley breeding program is all about in taking a high class Australian female family and blending it with an internationally acclaimed sire such as Medaglia D'Oro.

If Black Type comes his way in the autumn, Astern will be stallion material of the highest order.

Super Too as a yearlingRunning the fastest time of all the juveniles was the Marc Conners trained Hinchinbrook filly Super Too, who was quick and professional in taking her heat by more than a length in 46.30.

Considerably fitter than when finishing second in her first trial last month, she appeals as a natural runner as she should be given she is a half-sister to last season's Champion Singapore 2YO Super One.

A bargain basement purchase, having been snapped up for just $25,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale last year from the Broadwater Thoroughbreds draft, she might prove a very good investment.
