Seventh Stakes Win for Admiral

Mark Smith - Monday February 8

Rising star Admiral made hard work of Monday's Listed UBET Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) at Hobart, particularly for those that took the $1.10, however he is building an imposing record that should ensure another trip to the mainland.

At his one and only trip to the big leagues, Admiral was a meritorious fifth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington won by Wandjina from Alpine Eagle, Stratum Star and Kermadec.

Jockey Brendon McCoull fired the Barry Campbell-trainee to the lead in the straight but he looked to be all out holding the challenge of Powercharged (Magnus) by a long-neck with Perplexing (Top Speed) two and a half lengths back in third.

"It wasn't pretty but he did it," Campbell said.

"He pulls up. He's done it before.

"He usually gets that couple of lengths on them and he pulls up.

"It's tricky here and they're climbing up hill turning. Brendon said he would basically try and keep him out of trouble. He sat three-deep up the hill and four-wide straightening.

"Three-wide up the hill here at Elwick when the rail is out is suicide. Nine out of 10 will get beat."

The victory advances the overall record of the 4yo son of Mossman to 13 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third from18 starts for earnings of $587,300.

It was the seventh Listed Stakes win for Admiral who's next start will be the Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) at Launceston on February 24.

Bred by Bruno Calabro, Admiral's owners include Star Thoroughbreds principal Denise Martin.

He is the second and final foal for the very honest, stakes-placed,  West Quest (USA) mare Reunification, who won 12 races and placed in 7 of her 28 starts with over $190,000 in prizemoney.

Reunification died in May 2014.

Vinery Stud's ever popular Mossman (pictured) has two lots in the Inglis Premier Yearling sale and just one, a half-brother to Group 1 Emirates Strakes-winner Hucklebuck heading to Easter.
