One hour after the Darren Weir-trained Mahuta (Flying Spur) earned a fifth consecutive black-type win in the Group II Autumn Stakes at Caulfield, the Ballarat-based trainer was in the winners stall again with Burning Front who credited the Flying Spur stallion Primus with his first stakes-winner in the Group III The Cup Club T.S. Carlyon Cup (1600m).
It was a well-deserved maiden stakes success for the consistent 5yo gelding who has been on the board in 27 of his 35 starts.
Few are more honest with race caller Greg Miles saying it best "he's a little beauty isn't he", as Burning Front led every step of the way under Brad Rawiller. (photo Grant Courtney)
"Riding winners anywhere is what I love but when you have a great association with a horse it gives you an extra buzz," Rawiller said.
"This bloke may not have the class of Mahuta but he is just a ripper to ride.
"Well done to the Weir team, what is now number (start) 20 (without a spell), big effort.
The tough-as-teak son of Primus has started at least once a month, and often 3-times that, since March last year as noted by his champion trainer.
"Twenty starts without a break and in the money 19 times he's a dream horse for the owners," Weir said.
"Full credit to the boys down at the beach, Jarryd and his team, they keep him happy.
"We just give him a gallop before he runs and clean his wind up. He's got a great racing style makes his own luck and he's a good, tough, sound horse so that takes you a long way as well.
"Brad has got a great association with him, he clicks with him, rides him well and he's just a ripper horse to train.
"If those VOBIS races weren't coming up you might have a crack at something like the Futurity but they are too good to refuse."
With his maiden stakes success in the bag, Burning Front advances his overall record 11 wins, 8 seconds and 8 thirds from 35 starts with prizemoney of $542,210.
After being passed in short of his $40,000 reserve at the 2012 Inglis Autumn Yearling sale, Burning Front races for a group of owners that includes his breeder Justin Lovatt.
A former Stallion Manager at Chatswood Stud, where Primus initially stood, Lovatt had a double celebration as he purchased Primus to stand at Stonehurst Farm, Euroa where his 2015 fee was set at $2,200.
A brother to 4-time winner Apollo Creed and a half-brother to 5-time winner Cajo Kellila (Mister C), Burning Front is the third foal of the Kingston Rule (USA) mare She's A Knockout.
Her fifth foal, a yearling filly by hot stallion Written Tycoon will be in the Hollylodge Thoroughbreds draft at the upcoming Inglis Premier Yearling sale (see it here)
