High Spirits Under Control

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 5
A homebred for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, royally bred High Chaparral (IRE) colt High Spirit has been his own worst enemy at times, but may have turned over a new leaf after breaking the ice at Gosford on Thursday.

High ChaparralPrepared by Peter and Paul Snowden, High Spirit was resuming from a spell and scored by a neck as favourite over 1200 metres.

He had placed at three of his four previous runs, featuring regularly in the stewards reports, but has started this campaign on a positive note.

High Spirit is the second winner for unraced Encosta de Lago mare Azumi, a full sister to champion filly Alinghi that was purchased by Tim Stakemire on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum for $1.4 million at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

In recent times, Azumi has been a regular partner for Fastnet Rock and has a two year-old colt, yearling and weanling fillies by the champion sire and will foal again to him this year.
