One to Watch – Gosford

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 24
Gai Waterhouse won a Golden Slipper with a son of Medaglia D'Oro (USA) in Vancouver and produced another smart two year-old winner at Gosford on Tuesday by the same sire and he too has Group I aspirations.

A half-brother to Group I ATC Coolmore Classic winner Aloha, Vasiliev was third on debut at Canterbury to promising Sebring colt Acatour and relished a step up to 1600 metres at his second start to score an easy win.

Medaglia D'OroVasiliev stalked the leader and took over 400 metres from home showing a strong burst of acceleration to power right away from the field and although eased down to the line still won comfortably by more than a length.

The win over 1600 metres will stand him in good stead for coming engagements as he is entered for the Group I BRC JJ Atkins Plate over a mile next month.

A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Baramul Stud draft, Vasiliev runs for a partnership that includes Mr Hallowell Stud in whose colours he runs.

He comes with a big pedigree as he is not only a half-brother to Aloha, but also to the dam of Group II winner My Emotion from stakes-winning Danehill (USA) mare Tennessee Midnight, a three-quarter sister to Group I BTC Cup winner Malaguerra.
