First Australian-bred Winner for Gio Ponti

Mark Smith - Sunday July 24

Former Arrowfield Stud shuttler Gio Ponti (USA) sired his first winner in Australia when the Mel Eggleston-trained filly Licitra made a sparkling career debut in an all-aged maiden over 1100m at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Sent off a heavily backed favourite under Luke Rolls, Licitra made all the running for an untroubled three-length win over the Kris Lees-trained Valencay (Rothesay) with Mandela Dreaming (Turffontein) a length and a half back in third.

Bred by her trainer, Licitra is the fourth foal and third winner out of the stakes-winning Secret Savings mare Love And Money.

Licitra is one of 40 foals from the only southern hemisphere crop left by Gio Ponti (Tale Of The Cat) a 3-time Eclipse Award winner and 7-time Grade 1 winner who earned over US$6 million in prizemoney.
