Mare in Foal to Tavistock Tops NZB Winter

Media Release - Friday July 29

Mares in foal to boom sire Tavistock provided the highlights at today's Winter Mixed Bloodstock Sale at Karaka.

Coral Reef - Trish DunnellThe top Lot of the day came at Lot 27 with the race-winning mare Coral Reef, by global supersire Galileo, knocked down for $80,000 to the bid of Tony Bott's E-Thoroughbred Pty. The dam of a winner from two foals to race and in foal to current sire sensation Tavistock, Coral Reef will now head to the New South Wales based operation.

"We were keen to obtain Tavistock progeny so that was the main attraction with this mare but she also has a good pedigree so she fit the bill," commented Bott.

The second-top Lot of the Sale came at Lot 18, the Fastnet Rock mare Valtier, who is also in foal to Tavistock and sold for $60,000 to NZB as agent.

In the racehorse section the Savabeel gelding Sanasar, Lot 61, was the third-top Lot of the day selling for $45,000 to NZB as agent for a Hamilton-based client. Closely related to this year's $1 million Karaka Million winner Xiong Feng (Iffraaj), Sanasar is the winner of six races to date.

Today's top lot was sold by Brighthill Farm who finished the Sale as the leading vendor by aggregate with seven horses sold for $162,750, they were also the leading vendor by average (two or more sold) with an average of $23,250.

In all, with 83 lots catalogued the aggregate for the Sale was $408,250 with an average of $8,875 and a median that rose to $2,500 from $1,750 last year. The clearance rate was 64%.

A good crowd gathered earlier in the day to view the seven sires that attended the annual Karaka Stallion Parade. Atlante, Burgundy, El Roca, Il Cavallo, Proisir, Redwood and Vespa were presented, all stallions standing in the 2016 breeding season.

The next Sale on New Zealand Bloodstock's calendar is the Ready to Run Sale of Two-Year-Olds with entries closing on Friday 19 August 2016.
