Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Friday July 29

The majority of fans at Rosehill back on the 15th March 2008 believed they had just seen the Golden Slipper winner.

With Nash Rawiller sitting motionless in the saddle, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Amelia's Dream cruised to a six and a quarter length win over Hip's Don't Lie and Glowlamp in the Group II Silver Slipper.

The daughter of Redoute's Choice went off an odds-on favourite on the strength of a scintillating six and a quarter length romp at Canterbury a fortnight earlier when making her career debut.

While the superlatives were still flowing following her Silver Slipper triumph, rumours began circulating that all was not well with the filly.

She was spotted hobbling on to a horse float with a leg heavily bandaged and was rushed to the Randwick Equine Centre.

And just like that the racetrack career of Amelia's Dream came to an end.

Her stablemate Sebring went on to win the Golden Slipper and AJC Sires' Produce Stakes but he also never raced past his juvenile season.

The first mate chosen for Amelia's Dream was Encosta de Lago.

She subsequently foaled a filly, named Forget Me Not, that made $910,000 to the bid of James Harron at the 2012 Inglis Easter Yearling sale.

Tragedy struck the family again when Forget Me Not suffered a complete fracture above the hock and was euthanased at the Warwick Farm trials.

It was better news for Amelia Dream's second foal, Better Land, a son of Shamardal (USA) that was purchased by Peter Moody for $400,000 at the 2013 Easter Yearling sale.

Better Land won his only start at two, a maiden at Sale, before looking to be a colt with a future when finishing second to Scissor kick in the Listed The Rosebut at Randwick when making his seasonal debut at three.

He was then fourth behind the same horse in the Group III Up and Coming Stakes.

But he has proved a frustrating character since with a pair of wins in benchmark races at Ballarat his best results in 14 starts since.

After missing to More Than Ready (USA) in 2011, Amelia's Dream produced a colt by that international success story in 2013.

A $700,000 Inglis Easter purchase by Spendthrift Farm, from the Edinglassie draft, the colt was sent to the stables of Team Hawkes.

Named Spirit and Fire, he will be making a belated 2yo debut at Doomben on Saturday but, as the second emergency, will need a couple of scratching's to make the field.

If he does not gain a start, Spirit and Fire will be entered for a 3yo race in Sydney the following week.

Bearing a striking resemblance to his dam, Sprit and Fire showed ability with an easy trial win at Rosehill back on July 19.

Amelia's Dream had a Sepoy colt make $225,000 to the bid of Laurel Oak Bloodstock at this year's Easter Sale.

She has a weanling colt by More Than Ready (USA) and was bred back to the Vinery stalwart last year.

Herself a $250,000 purchase by Gai Waterhouse from the Yarraman Park draft at the 2007 Magic Millions Yearling sale, Amelia's Dream is a daughter of the Listed BTC Doomben Slipper winner Shalt Not (St Covet) whose earnings of over $827,000 were bolstered by a win in the Magic Millions 3yo Classic.

She is a half-sister to Bravo Zulu the dam of Grand Zulu (Grand Lodge) who was trained by Gwenda Markwell to win the Group 1 BMW. He had a couple of handy scalps that day with the courageous Mummify coming in second and the imperious Makybe Diva clocking in third.
