Second Stakes for Snitzel's Redzel

Mark Smith - Saturday August 27

Saturday's $150,000 Group III The Resimax Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield is a story easy told, Mark Zahra jumped Snitzel gelding Redzel to the front, kept up a relentless gallop to lead at every call, then held the challenge of hard-charging favourite Under The Louvre.

Winner of the Listed Fireball Stakes at Randwick back in March, Redzel prepped for his Melbourne sojourn with a win at Canterbury four weeks back.

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden for Triple Crown Syndications, Redzel advances his overall record to 4 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third from 11 starts with earnings of $323,200.

Though he was shortening stride in the closing stages Redzel clung to a neck advantage over the fast finishing Stradbroke Handicap hero Under The Louvre (Excellent Art) with Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) closing well for third.(photo Grant Courtney).

"He's very fast out of the gates, we've tried holding him up but he's better when you just let him roll," Peter Snowden said.

"He was getting tired but had done enough."

"He'll go back (to Sydney). If I had stables here then he'd stay here but we haven't unfortunately," Snowden said.

"It's a great result and a race we identified straight after his last start. He had a fair break between wins but the way he races he takes a fair bit out of himself.

"We'll keep raising the bar with him. They were good horses chasing him down and there are some nice races coming up for him."

A $45,000 pinhook by Marquee Stud at the 2013 Inglis Select Weanling sale, Redzel was a $120,000 purchase by Triple Crown Syndications at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale.

A half-brother to the Group III winner and accomplished stallion Danerich, Redzel is the tenth living foal of the former top-class Rubiton mare Millrich.

Winner of the Group III Sweet Embrace Stakes, Millrich was placed in the Group 1 Golden Slipper, Group II Silver Shadow Stakes, Group II Magic Night Stakes and Group II San Domenico Stakes.

Millrich died three weeks after foaling Redzel.
