Exceed And Excel Filly Too Slick in Gimcrack Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday October 1

Pint-sized Exceed and Excel filly Jorda credited Godolphin with its third consecutive Listed Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (1000) winner when the babies made their debut at Randwick on Saturday.

The Lonhro filly Calaverite carried the royal blue silks in 2014 while Exceed And Excel sired last year's winner Calliope.

Backed into odds-on favouritism after an impressive barrier trial win at Randwick, Jorda was given the run of the race, one out and one back, under James McDonald.

Despite running about in the straight, Jorda has little trouble holding off the challenge of the fast-finishing outsider Kanga's Eye (Denman) by three-quarters of a length with that filly's stablemate Lucky Louie also hitting the line hard a further half-length back in third. (photos Steve Hart)

"She moves like a panther and gallops like one as well," McDonald said.

"She's been very well educated and has a great attitude.

"She's still got plenty of growing to do - she really covers the ground, a beautiful stride."

A half-sister to the stakes-placegetters Calonia (Flying Spur) and Pursuits (Lonhro), Jorda is the fourth foal of the stakes-placed Viscount mare Montmelo a three-quarter sister to Listed winner Le Mans (Quest For Fame) from the family of Danehill Stakes winner Aichi and Group III winner Detours.

Montmelo has a patchy breeding record. She slipped in 2014 before foaling a filly by Lonhro last spring.

Jorda becomes the 123rd stakes-winner for Darley Stud's Exceed and Excel who quickly made it 124 when Khan captured the Listed Breeders' Plate.
