Snitzel's Russian Revolution Upsets Astern in Roman Consul Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday October 1

Striking Snitzel colt Russian Revolution rained on the parade of Astern and Capitalist in Saturday's $300,000 Group II The Star Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Randwick to keep his record at a perfect four for four.

Carrying the increasingly familiar red and yellow silks of the China Horse Club, Russian Revolution led every step of the way under Kerrin McEvoy to defeat the fast-finishing Astern, who came from last, by a head with Golden Slipper hero Capitalist a length and a quarter back in third. It vindicated the decision of trainer's Peter and Paul Snowden to take on his stablemate Capitalist and Astern in the three-year-old contest rather than the Premiere Stakes later in the day.

Winner of the Group III Vain Stakes at Caulfield at his most recent start, Russian Revolution advances his record to 4 wins from as many starts with earnings of $372,725.

The $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight on October 29 now looms large for the first three home.

"There was no fluke in that, he's a very talented horse," Peter Snowden said.

"I thought he could dictate this race up front and it worked out perfectly.

"He relaxed really well and was very good late.

"He's got plenty of upside and is a very good colt.

"I'm definitely thinking the Coolmore Stud Stakes for Russian Revolution.

"I'll talk to the team about Capitalist, but I'm prepared to also go on with him."

With the speed taken out of the race with the scratching of El Divino and Guard Of Honour, McEvoy said he was more than happy to set the pace.

"We looked the only speed in the race with Gai's horse coming out," McEvoy said.

"I didn't have much choice. I was the only horse with speed and I drew the outside.

"Peter and Paul left it up to me. I was able to get him into a nice rhythm."

Bred by John Stuart Investments, Russian Revolution was a $320,000 purchase by China Horse Club / Michael Wallace Bloodstock from the Vinery Stud draft at the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling sale.

The son of Snitzel is the fourth foal and fourth winner out of the imported Stravinsky mare Ballet D'Amour (USA).

A winning half-sister to stakes-winner Taletobetold (Tale Of The Cat), from the family of champion sires Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago, Ballet D'Amour (USA) was purchased for $100,000 by James Harron Bloodstock, on behalf of Belinda Bateman, at the 2015 Inglis Easter Broodmare sale when carrying a filly by Smart Missile.

She was covered by Snitzel's son Wandjina last spring.
