Four weeks after winning the Devonport Cup, the Star Thoroughbreds colour-bearer Newhart trounced the odds-on favourite Mystic Journey by three and three-quarter lengths in Sundays Listed The Mills Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) at Hobart.
Ridden by Craig Newitt for trainer Leanne Gaffney, the 5yo son Fighting Son advanced his record to seven wins and five seconds from 14 starts with earnings of $256,400.
Purchased by Star Thoroughbreds/Paul Willetts Bloodstock for $60,000 out of the Fairways Bloodstock draft at the 2017 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Newhart is a half-brother to the stakes-placed Derasa (Squamosa).
They are the only two to race out of the Commands mare Jesting who was purchased for just $3,000 at the 2013 Inglis August Thoroughbred Sale.
From the family of Fantastic light (IRE) and Your Song, Jesting has a 2yo gelding by Suamosa named Snappy Jim.
After foaling a Pride Of Dubai last spring, Jesting was bred back to the champion first season sire.
Newhart becomes the second stakes-winner for Sun Stud’s ill-fated Northern Meteor stallion Fighting Sun who died in June last year after leaving six crops.
