Excites Gelding Claims Gosford Cup

Mark Smith - Friday January 13

A last start winner of the Group III Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day, Gerald Ryan's seven-year-old gelding Red Excitement carried top weight of 59kgs to an all the way victory in Friday's Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100).

Ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, Red Excitement defeated Villiers Stakes winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) by three lengths with Tatt's Club Cup winner Destiny's Kiss (Power Of Destiny) a length back in third. (photo Steve Hart)

"He jumps out and does it all himself," Hyeronimus told AAP.

"He's a very strong horse.

"It's a massive win given he's obviously never been over this distance and carried the top weight."

It was the third stakes win for the 7yo son of Excites who opened his stakes account in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes in January 2015. His overall record advances to 13 wins, 3 seconds and 6 thirds from 40 starts with earnings of $872,595.

A $32,500 purchase from the Evergreen Stud Farm draft at the 2011 Inglis Classic Yearling sale, Red Excitement is out of the Red Ransom (USA) mare Red Obsession, a half-sister to Listed winner Brayroan and to the dam of Golden Slipper and Magic Millions 2yo Classic winner Capitalist.

Red Obsession's dam Compulsion (Danehill) is a sister to Golden Slipper winner Merlene and a half-sister to Group 1 Newmarket Handicap winner Miss Pennymoney (Brocco).

Purchased at the 2012 Easter Broodmare sale for $12,000, Red Obsession has a 2yo colt by Tickets and a Lope De Vega colt in the Moobi Farm draft heading to the Inglis Classic sale in January as Lot 166.

She missed to Magic Albert in 2015 and was covered by Horse Of The Year Dissident last year.

After beginning his stud career at Vinery Stud, Excites now stands at Springfields Stud at a fee of $4,400.
