19th Stakes Winner for Written Tycoon

Mark Smith - Sunday January 15

Slade Bloodstock will be feeling mighty chuffed after purchasing a Bernardini (USA) colt for $100,000 on the opening day of the Magic Millions Yearling sale then watching on as his half-brother Grande Rosso opened his stakes account in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Ridden by apprentice Regan Bayliss for the Lindsay Park trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, Grande Rosso came clear to defeat the hard-charging   Zupacharged (Zupaone) by one and a quarter lengths with Sold For Song (Collate) the same distance back in third.in third. In becoming the 19th stakes-winner for Written Tycoon, the 5yo gelding advances his record to 6 wins and 6 seconds from 24 starts with earnings of $318,210.

Consigned by Redbank North to the 2013 Inglis Premier Yearling sale, the son of Written Tycoon was purchased by Glenhuntly Lodge for $220,000.

At the time he was the most expensive yearling by his sire sold at public auction.

What a difference a few years make. Written Tycoon's 8 lots at the Magic Millions averaged $307,500 and sold up to $650,000.

Grande Rosso is the first foal of the Rory's Jester mare Jestemma a half-sister to Listed winner Spinning Jenny (Hard Spun) and the stakes-placed Philda (Secret Savings) a 12-time winner of over $433,000.

Another half-sister Soorena is the dam of Group I Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback (Street Boss) and the multiple Group II winner and Group I Australian Derby runner-up Philipi (Host).

Jestemma has a filly foal by Helmet and was bred back to Written Tycoon last spring.

Written Tycoon has 6 catalogued for the Inglis Classic Sale and 30 heading to the Inglis Premier.
