One to Watch – Doomben

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 18
David Van Dyke has shown he can train a seriously good horse and this one might be his next.

Deep Image as a yearlingThree year-old Testa Rossa gelding Deep Image was thrown in the deep end when making his debut at the end of last year in the Listed BRC Gold Edition Stakes at Doomben.

Winning Rupert won that race by a street in brilliant time, but chasing gamely in second place five and a half lengths back was Deep Image.

Given a much easier assignment in the 1350 metre maiden at his second start, Deep Image made light of his 60kg top weight to win easily by two and a half lengths as favourite.

Interviewed after the race David Van Dyke said Deep Image was a big horse that had needed time, but he would be looking at stakes races for him later in the year.

Deep Image was a $150,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Vinery Stud draft for his trainer and is the second winner for unraced Redoute's Choice mare Starwish, a half-sister to stakes-winner Brilliant Bisc from Group I winner Stella Cadente.

The current yearling from Starwish is a More Than Ready (USA) colt that will be offered by Henley Park as agent for Jamieson Park at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale as Lot 241.
