The Joe Pride-trained Terravista stunned punters in his first Group I win when defeating Chautauqua, Lankan Rupee and Buffering in the 2015 Darley Classic and was even less fancied in his second win at the elite level in Saturday's $750,000 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington.
In a thrilling finish with less than a length covering the first five across the line, Terravista gave jockey Cory Brown a welcome back to Australia by edging out a luckless Speith (Thorn Park) by a short-half-head with Star Turn a short-head back in third. (photo Grant Courtney).
Runner-up to Chautauqua in the same race 12 months ago, Terravista was winning for the first time since the Group II Premier Stakes at Randwick in October 2015.
The seven-year-old son of Captain Rio advances his overall record to 11 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds from 25 starts with earnings of $2,465,005.
"I watched him travel. He looked like he was going beautiful. Obviously, I was worried he wasn't going to get a run but I prefer to see him like that than out in the clear," Pride said.
"He's the 1000m horse in this field and if hadn't have got there today, it was going to be a worry about when he was going to beat
Pride said a start in the Newmarket handicap would depend on what weight the 7yo gelding receives.
"It would depend on what the handicapper does with him but he's a super horse down the straight," Pride said.
Foaled and raised at Torryburn Stud whose brand he carries, Terravista is the standout produce of the champion broodmare Parfore who is also the dam of Group I winner and $1.2 million earner Tiger Tees (Dubawi), Champion Singapore Sprinter / Miler and Singapore Horse of the Year Super Easy (Darci Brahma), Group II winner Ball of Muscle (Dubawi) and multiple stakes-winner Our Lukas (Generous).
Owned by Mike and Christine Ryan, Parfore died at Segenhoe Stud last year at the age 18.
A daughter of the brilliant sprinter Gold Brose, Parfore was out of the takes-winning Twig Moss (Fr) mare Classy Twiggy.
A five lengths winner of a Geelong maiden from four starts, Parfore was offered at the NZB National Broodmare Sale in 2004, where she was knocked down to bloodstock agent Paul Willetts, on behalf of Mike and Christine Ryan, for $30,000.
Honoured in 2015 as the New Zealand Broodmare of the Year, Parfore's final foal is a colt by Rip Van Winkle (pictured).
