NZ Breds To The Fore on Tasmanian Oaks Day

Mark Smith - Sunday February 19

Damian Lane and Darren Weir played the villain in both stakes races at Launceston on Sunday when their filly Parthesia downed the hometown heroine Hot Dipped in the $100,000 Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) before they were beaten with the odds-on favourite Lyuba in the $125,000 Group III Vamos Stakes (1400m).

Coming off a win in the Listed Strutt Stakes (2100m) at Hobart, Hot Dipped loomed up to win the Tasmanian Oaks but could not hold off the challenge of Victorian raider Parthesia.

Another Victorian, Wheal Leisure, charged home from the tail of the field to finish third.

The New Zealand-bred Parthesia had just a maiden win over 1800m at Horsham last October to her name and had not been placed in her last four starts including a last start eighth of 14 behind Doom 'n' Boom over 2100m at Sandown on February 8.

The 3yo filly becomes the second stakes-winner for White Robe Lodge's royally-bred Sadler's Wells stallion Raise The Flag (pictured) a half-brother to Banks Hill, Heat Haze, Intercontinental, Cacique, Champs Elysees and champion sire Dansili.

Parthesia is the first foal of the twice winning Danzighill mare Notable, a three-quarter sister to Group II Wellington Cup winner and 2-time Group III NZ Cup winner Blood Brotha.

Notable is also a half-sister to Group III winners De Montfort and King Johnny out of the Noble Bijou mare Lal's Gift who is a sister to Group I AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Group I Tancred Stakes and Group I Spring Champion Stakes winner Prince Majestic.

Weir and Lane were favoured to capture the Group III Vamos Stakes (1400m) with odds-on favourite Lyuba but she could not catch the $31 chance Kiss Me Ketut who led all the way for Boris Thornton.

The Matthew Brown-trained mare came into the race off a last of eight at Moonee Valley on February 3.

Also bred in NZ, Kiss Me Ketut was a $95,000 purchase from the Highview draft at the 2012 NZB Select Yearling Sale.

The 6yo daughter of Danroad is the eighth foal and third stakes-winner out of the imported Sadler's Wells mare Make Me Dream (IRE) after the Listed winners Fast Love (Fastnet Rock) and A Chance To Dream (Volksraad).

The 11th foal of Make Me Dream, a colt by Snitzel, made $525,000 to the bid of Good Harvest Bloodstock at the recent NZB Premier Yearling sale.
