Big Duke Stamps His Claim for Sydney Cup

Mark Smith - Saturday April 1

The Darren Weir-trained Big Duke (IRE) needed the assistance of stewards to win the Manion Cup at his most recent start but he left nothing to chance in Saturday's $300,000 Group II Schweppes Chairman's Handicap (2600m) at Randwick.

With Craig Williams in the saddle, the Australian Bloodstock colour-bearer was promoted to the top line of Sydney Cup betting after defeating Aloft (IRE) (Galileo) by two lengths with another three-quarter of a length back to Rock On (Road To Rock) in third.

"I'm very grateful for Darren Weir and the connections for honouring their commitment and getting a winner on one of the great days on the Australian racing calendar," Williams said.

"They didn't go much of a gallop and he got himself into a lovely position.

"Darren asked me to be mindful he had 58 (kg) over an extended trip and it worked out beautifully.

"When we got to the turn there was half a run and I had plenty of horse. He was able to make it a full run.

"He won untouched today so it was nice."

Bred by Mount Coote Stud and Richard Pegum, Big Duke advances his overall record stands at 6 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds from 12 starts with earnings of $515,674. (photos Steve Hart) .

From the family of the champion mare Streama and Middle Park Stakes winner Hittite Glory, Big Duke is by Darley Stud's Breeders' Cup Classic hero Raven's Pass (Elusive Quality) out of the Polish Precedent mare Hazarayna a half-sister to Group III winner Hazarista (Barathea) who was placed in the Group I Irish Oaks and Group I Yorkshire Oaks and a half-sister to Listed winner  Hazariya (Xaar) who is the dam of Group III winner and Group I placed Harasiya.
