Winx Stays Perfect For Two Seasons

Mark Smith - Saturday April 8

The scariest thing about the domination of Winx is that if she wins the same eight races next season that she accumulated with the minimum of fuss this season, the 5-year-old mare's prizemoney will rocket to almost $19 million.

The daughter of Street Cry (IRE) had her biggest payday in her 27-start career with a typically dominant performance before nearly 30,000  adoring fans in Saturday's $4 million Group I Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

It was Godolphin's Hartnell (Authorized) who was the whipping boy once again, trying his heart out as Winx cruised by to win by to win by five and a quarter lengths with a long-neck back to the $151 outsider Sense Of Occasion ($151) in third.

It was the 17th consecutive win, 19th stakes win and 12th Group I for the Chris Waller-trained mare, advancing her record to 21 wins and 3 seconds from 27 starts with earnings of $12,893,425.

She vaults passed the champion Sunline and has the $14,526,685  earnings of triple Melbourne Cup heroine in her sights.

Waller said it was time for the superstar to have a break.

"I'm a racing fan through and through and like everyone I die to see horses like her so having the responsibility that comes with training her makes you very emotional when it's over," Waller said.

"It's just a big relief.

"It's indescribable really. It's me putting undue pressure on myself but it's hard not to.

"Get back to reality now. She's ready for a break and so am I."

It was on this day two years ago that Winx last tasted defeat.

Ridden by Joao Moreira she finished second in the Group I ATC Australian Oaks won by Gust Of Wind

She is just so dominant," Hugh Bowman said after the win.

"What a supreme athlete she is and what an honour it is to just be a part of her career.

"I don't whip her too often, but I wanted that supreme effort today. The grand final and when I gave her one she extended again.

"Just look at her she's a supreme athlete, she's the ultimate professional, I love her and I could really feel the crowd's love for her."

Bred by John Camilleri's Fairway Thoroughbreds, Winx was a $230,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Coolmore draft for Peter Tighe's Magic Bloodstock.

A half-sister to Group III Kindergarten Stakes winner El Divino, Winx is out of the Al Akbar mare Vegas Showgirl who has a 2yo colt by Snitzel that was purchased for $2,300,000 out of the Segenhoe Stud draft by Gai Waterhouse Racing / J Blaxland at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale.

Vegas Showgirl a weanling Snitzel filly and was covered by Exceed And Excel last spring.
