Just
a few years back this stallion had been firmly pegged as having better colts
than fillies, but with four stakes-winners over the past weekend and three of
them fillies, the tide might be turning.
Sadly departed High Chaparral (IRE) is the sire of 95 stakes-winners worldwide
and the Epsom Derby winner was in good form over the weekend with a stakes
double in New Zealand (Charmont and Mangaroa Flo Jo), a juvenile stakes-winner at
Randwick (Whispered Secret) and a high class three yea-old winner in Ireland
with Rekindling winning the Group III Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown (read about this Lloyd Williams owned colt here).
Of the four stakes-winners, only Rekindling is a colt.
Royally bred Charmont, a grand-daughter of former star mare Champagne, is his
17th Group I winner after taking out the Thoroughbred Breeders
Stakes at Te Rapa.
Charmont is the second female Group I winner for High Chaparral in the past few
weeks following on from Montoya's Secret, winner of the ATC Vinery Stud Stakes.
Of those 17 Group I winners sired by High Chaparral, only five are fillies, so
there is a bias at the top end towards his colts, but statistics do tend to
even out with time, so if you've bought a filly from his final crop this year
the odds might be in your favour.
Of his 95 stakes-winners, 55 are colts and 40 are fillies.
