A
look at the list of first time sires for 2017 may make you feel as though there
are no good sprinting three year-old colts even left in work.
Heading to stud this spring are Capitalist, Flying Artie, Extreme Choice, Astern,
Winning Rupert and Star Turn, their retirement leaving a void in the up and
coming sprinters division.
Set to make hay while the suns shines in their absence is Snitzel colt Russian
Revolution, who snared Group I success in the ATC The Galaxy before coming up
short when favourite in the Group I ATC TJ Smith Stakes won by Chautauqua.
There were excuses on that occasion, given he had a torrid time when winning
first up from a spell and then drew wide in the TJ forcing him to over-race in
the early stages as he sought the lead.
He faded for sixth on that occasion, but showed he was back to his brilliant
best with a facile trial win at Randwick on Friday morning.
The Peter and Paul Snowden trained colt jumped fast for Kerrin McEvoy before
being steadied to take a sit and then powered away under a hold to win the 1045
metre hit-out as he pleased by more than three lengths.
Ultimately set to retire to Newgate Farm, Russian Revolution runs for a
partnership of breeders that also includes China Horse Club and is favourite for
the Group I BRC Doomben Ten Thousand (1200m) next month.
If allowed to race on into his four year-old season , the dynamic son of
Snitzel may well prove the perfect candidate for the inaugural $10 million
Everest at Randwick in October.
