Woodside Park Stud in collaboration with Gilgai Farm, Grand Lodge and B2B Bloodstock are working together to ensure Cable Bay, the Group 2 winning son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) will have an unparalleled opportunity for a successful first season at stud in Australia.
In a strategic manoeuvre, the Cable Bay Syndicate have joined forces with highly respected bloodstock agents Damon Gabbedy from Belmont Bloodstock and Dermot Farrington, to identify mares at the recent Magic Millions Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast, that will be a good fit for their new stallion.
The idea was born from Gilgai Farm's desire to find a quality stallion with the right pedigree makeup and test the idea that with correct management, the chances of a successful outcome are increased. It was agreed that if the right stallion was found, he would only cover suitable mares, based on Gilgai Farm's mating model.
Gilgai Farm's Rick Jamieson searched the local and international bloodstock markets to find the stallion that had the correct pedigree profile that would maximise the prospect of success. Cable Bay fitted the bill, and with Highclere Stud happy to allow the stallion to shuttle to the southern hemisphere, the deal was done.
Having flown to the UK to visit Highclere Stud, Jamieson's confidence was boosted after not only seeing Cable Bay himself, an outstanding physical type but also by seeing the excellent first crop of foals Cable Bay has produced.
Woodside Park Stud is thrilled to stand the stallion at their Tylden base and to be a part of the Cable Bay Syndicate. They could clearly see the unique opportunity that was presented, and will unquestionably support Cable Bay with the right type of mare.
Having a pedigree that is highly sort after by Australian breeders, Cable Bay is by Invincible Spirit, the sire of I Am Invincible. From the Irish mare, Rose De France by Diktat, the sire of the 5-time Group 1 winner Dream Ahead.
Rose De France is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Bowman. Her grand-dam is the Group 1 winner Cherokee Rose, from a family of black type producers including Tulips, Kirklees, Mastery, Mukhadram and Magic Artist.
Partnering with Gilgai Farm is a coup, their strike rate is second to none, performing one hundred times above the industry average based on their brilliant racetrack results. Producing only 12 – 15 foals annually, from a small band of 20 modestly bred mares, they are best known for Australia's greatest ever sprinter, Black Caviar and champion stayer, Jameka, currently rated eighth best in the world rankings.
Gilgai Farm's focus is to breed a successful racehorse rather than for a commercial outcome. Having often used stallions due to pedigree matches with the mare, rather than popularity, they supported stallions Bel Esprit, Casino Prince, Myboycharlie, Sebring and Street Boss, all before they were considered successful, with outstanding results.
From their foals born between 2008 – 2014, Gilgai Farm can boast five Group 1 winners from only 54 foals to race, a figure that will possibly increase when all crops reach full maturity.
Running at 9.3% average Group 1 winners to named horses, and 14.8% average Group 1 performers to named horses, their total earnings are an astonishing $26,731,000 million, with each galloper earning an impressiveaverage total prize money.
Gilgai Farm has over many years developed its own and unique method of selecting the matings for their exclusive broodmare band. With the resultant success, Jamieson has been keen to apply the same mating model to the right stallion, believing comparable results of more than 10% stakes winners to runners can be achieved.
Therefore the intention for Cable Bay as a stallion is to only accept mares with the correct pedigree pattern. This requirement will not only give the mare owner a better chance of a successful mating, but will also enable the opportunity for Cable Bay to produce 7 - 10 times better progeny success, as compared to the current averages.
Underpinning this expectation, and demonstrating the confidence and commitment shown to Cable Bay, the Cable Bay Syndicate will be sending 50 correctly matched mares.
As such, to increase their number of suitable mares, the Cable Bay Syndicate have purchased the following mares from the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale to send to Cable Bay in his important first season at stud here in Victoria.
Lot 641 - The young mare Versos de Amor by Lope De Vega out of the Keeper mare and Group 1 winner Linky Dink. From the family of Gimmick, Clearly Innocent and Sale Of Century.
Lot 656 – Purchased for $200,000 is the Godolphin mare Anthelion, by Sepoy out of the Last Tycoon mare Chiara. Chiara is the dam of Chinchilla Rose, Ferocity and Leone Chiara, who is, in turn, the dam of Star Witness and Nostradamus.
Lot 672 - Purchased for $360,000 is the Myboycharlie mare, Butterboom. From the El Prado mare Butters, dam of Foxplay.
Lot 732 - Purchased for $200,000 is the Mastercraftsman mare, Kansas Sunflower. Out of a Mark Of Esteem mare, Virginia Key from the black type producing family of Bellarida, In Clover, We Are, Bellona Assign and Observational.
Lot 748 – Purchased for $500,000, the Group 1 winner of the Tatt's Tiara, Miss Cover Girl will continue to race, before heading to Cable Bay on her retirement.
Lot 754 – Purchased for $325,000 is the Mossman mare, Mossin' Around, out of the Octagonal mare Rhythmic Affair. From the family of Rhythmic Charm and Universal Ruler.
Lot 950 – Purchased for $115,000 is the Snitzel mare Tiz My View from the Cee's Tizzy mare Miss Tizzy. In foal to Super One,this speedy 2yo is from the family of Amiable Grace and Awesome Baby.
Lot 1066 – The Bernardini mare Berkeley Gardens, from the Marju mare Melrose Gardens. In foal to Choisir, she is from the family of Sangreal and Easy Running.
Lot 1118 – The Mastercraftsman mare Coachella from the US mare D.J. Lightening. Covered by Deep Field, she was a three-time winner from the family of Braari, Consent, Special Alert and Shaard.
Lot 1151 – The Darci Brahma mare Darook Park, from the End Sweep mare, Silk Ending. In foal to Tavistock, she is from the family of Gypsy Diamond and Russian Revolution.
Lot 1324 – The $200,000 Lonhro Mare, Kozakov from the Danehill Dancer mare, Downhill Racer. A Group 2 winner, she is in foal to Exceed and Excel. From the family of Schubert, Recast, Gonski and Pinezero.
Lot 1349 – The Hold That Tiger mare, Lilly The Filly. From the Danehill Dancer mare, Winning Team, she is in foal to Woodside Park Stud's own, Rich Enuff. Dam of It Is Written, Rebecca Gay, Winter King and How Good Is He.
