Ex-Racehorses Compete at Interschools

Tara Madgwick - Thursday June 15
The NSW State Interschools Equestrian Championships are being held this week at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre and it's pleasing to see a good number of children competing on off the track thoroughbreds.

A story published by Breednet on Wednesday - Animal Welfare Horse Racing Myths Exposed - highlighted the 50% of ex-racehorses that are re-homed for other purposes and one of those uses will be highlighted at Interschools.

Click here to see the list of entries eligible for major OTT prizes sponsored by our major studs.

Among the list are some familiar names including the former Gai Waterhouse trained stakes-winner Restless, who turns 20 this year. He's now ridden by Harry and Georgie Mitchell's daughter Willa and is competing in eventing, combined training and showjumping.

This $2million Inglis Easter yearling in 2007 competes in the show horse events at Interschools as Lord CairoRedoute's Choice gelding El Cairo fetched $2million at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and is competing in the show horse events ridden by Emily Lord.

My daughter Jasmine Haynes makes her State Interschools debut on Daybreak Del Pietro (formerly Piazza San Pietro), who won five races for the late Bede Murray before a bowed tendon brought down the curtain on his promising career.

Jasmine has forged a good partnership with 'The Pie' and has worked hard over the past two years to re-educate him to the world of equestrian, progressing from the early days of trotting over cross rails to competing in the 90cm and 1m jumping.

The eventing phase of this event was run on Wednesday with Win Commander ridden by Emily Hill taking the OTT award for eventing. Win Commander is a 14yo gelding by Commands from Slightly Suss
