More Group One Success for Helmet
Tara Madgwick - Monday, 10 July 2017
Star Helmet colt Thunder Snow claimed his second Group I success overnight with a bold front running win in the Group I Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly.

Thunder Snow - Courtesy GodolphinThe first Group I winner for his sire when capturing the Group I Saint-Cloud Criterium International last October at two, the Saeed bin Suroor trained colt was visiting France for the first time since then and emerged triumphant.

Sent straight to the front by jockey Christophe Soumillon, Thunder Snow dictated the pace throughout the one-mile contest and once asked to quicken two furlongs from home, was never troubled and eased clear to win by just over a length from the improving Trais Fluors with Redoute's Choice colt Gold Luck in third place.

"I think Thunder Snow likes being in France; he has run twice and won two Group 1s. We'll keep the options open with him between the Juddmonte International and the QEII in October. Or he could come back for the Jacques le Marois. It depends on the ground, and we will have to see how he comes out of this race," said his trainer Saeed Bin Suroor.

Thunder Snow adds to the current run of success being enjoyed worldwide by Godolphin runners.

A tough and consistent campaigner, he won on debut at Leicester last May and was placed at Group II level twice before winning the Criterium International by no fewer than five lengths.

He returned this year with a wide-margin victory in the UAE 2,000 Guineas, following up in the UAE Derby. He was last seen finishing just a length and a quarter behind Barney Roy in the Group I St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month after chasing home Churchill for second in the Group I Irish Two Thousand Guineas.

HelmetThunder Snow is a half-brother to Group II winner Ihtimal, Group III winner First Victory and stakes-winner Always Smile being from star producer Eastern Joy, a half-sister by Dubai Destination to Group I winner West Wind.

Thunder Snow is the best of seven stakes-winners for Darley's triple Group I winner Helmet.

The handsome chestnut son of Exceed and Excel stands at Darley Victoria this spring at a fee of $16,500.
