German Import Outstays Them in Queensland Cup
Mark Smith - Sunday, 16 July 2017

German import Araldo Junior (GER) broke a 13-month drought when he outstayed the favourite My Diamantine in Saturday's $150,000 Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) on the Sunshine Coast.

Ridden by Michael Cahill, Araldo Junior gave trainer Mike Moroney his third Queensland Cup by defeating My Diamantine by two and three-quarter lengths with Pop 'N' Scotch another length and a quarter back in third, his fourth consecutive placing in the race after finishing runner-up in the previous three years.

Stable representative Nerissa Copp said Araldo Junior had endured a horror road trip from Sydney.

"It took us 17 hours to drive up from Sydney, there was a huge accident on the motorway at Palm Beach and we just had to stop and turn the engine off," stable representative Copp said.

"We could not even get off the road for a couple of hours.

"It is lucky he is such an easy-going horse.

"It didn't help us either when the track was upgraded from soft to good – but it didn't worry him and he was just too good."

It was the first stakes win for the 6yo son of Medicean who won the Benalla Gold Cup at his third start in Australia back in October 2015 before adding a 2500m handicap at Flemington in June 2016.

Araldo Junior is a half-brother to the Moroney-trained Araldo (GER) (High Chaparral) who won the Listed VRC Bart Cummings Handicap and finished second in the Group I ATC Metropolitan Handicap

Also Group I placed in Germany, Araldo was euthanised after a freak accident following his seventh in the 2014 Melbourne Cup.

Another half-brother Altano (Galileo) was honoured as the Champion Older Male Stayer in Italy in 2011and Champion Older Male Stayer in Germany in 2012 and 2013.

His 13 wins included the Group I Prix du Cadran at Longchamp.

The three stakes winners are out of the unraced Lando mare Alanda a half-sister to the Champion Older Female Stayer in Germany in 2001, Abitara (Rainbow Quest) out of the Champion 3YO Filly in Germany in 1992, Arastou (Surumu).

Araldo Junior becomes the 44th stakes winner for Medicean (Machiavellian) (pictured) who stands at Cheveley Park Stud for a fee of £6,000.
