Sparkling Debut Victory for Capitalist Filly Lazzago

Tara Madgwick - Saturday December 17

Widden Stud raised and sold, exciting Capitalist filly Lazzago has been a watch horse at the recent trials and lived up to her potential when overpowering the short priced favourite Snapback to win on debut at Randwick.

Persistent showers and windy weather made for less than ideal conditions for the juveniles stepping out in the 1100m contest, but the Chris Waller trained Lazzago kept her composure.

She settled well for Brenton Avdulla and tracked the favourite Snapback and followed the Snitzel colt into the race. When switched around his heels she let down with a great run to surge past and win by a long neck.

A $460,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Widden draft for Woppitt Bloodstock, Lazzago is not eligible for the Magic Millions, but impressed bookmakers as she was immediately added to the Golden Slipper market at $34.

“We knew she was pretty special as both her trials were very good, The Kepitis family have bought a nice filly and we said to them about a month ago we thought we had something, but you don’t know until race day,” said Chris Waller.

“She’s a promising filly going forward. We’ll get through today and see how she pulls up as she’s very raw, so I think probably a short break and then look for a nice race for her.”

Lazzago was a $460,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Widden Stud.

Bred by long time Widden Stud client Robert Anderson, Lazzago is from good metro winning Pins mare Lake Como, a half-sister to juvenile stakes-winner Taameer, the dam of two juvenile stakes-winners in Khulaasa and Bulbula, the dam of Group III VRC Ottawa Stakes winner Aryaaf.

It’s a family of precocious fast fillies and Lazzago fits the mould.

Widden Stud will offer a half-brother by Epaulette to Lazzago at Magic Millions as Lot 42. He is a three-quarter brother-in-blood to Khulaasa and closely related to Aryaaf, who are also by Epaulette.
