Highest Priced Trapeze Artist Colt Makes Exciting Debut

Mark Smith - Wednesday November 15

Seven 2-year-olds made their career debuts in the Toyota Forklifts Maiden Hcp (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Wednesday, and the Trapeze Artist colt Spywire put them to the sword.

Ridden by Tyler Schiller for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Spywire looked the consummate professional to lead at every call.

The same could not be said of the $410,000 I Am Invincible filly Canara, who tacked her way down the straight to be beaten by two and a quarter lengths.

The $1,400,000 Snitzel colt Everybody Rise was four lengths back in third as the seven runners were spread out over 18 lengths.

The highest-priced Trapeze Artist yearling sold in 2023, Spywire was a $520,000 purchase for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/Group 1 Bloodstock (FBAA) from the Widden Stud draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Spywire a $520,000 Magic Millions yearling

“He did everything right; jumped straight to the front, which was not really the plan, but he did it well, controlling it from the front, and he kicked away,” stable representative Johann Gerard-Dubord said.

“He learnt plenty from the trials, and that was very professional.

‘It’s great to get a win at his first start. We have some good stable clients in him - they are Ozzie Keir’s colours, John O’Neil, Widden, Lindsay Caminiti; they paid a lot of money for him; he is a lovely horse.

“The (Magic Millions) is on the cards. This is the right time of year for this kind of horse. We will be considering it.”

Spywire is the second winner from three to race for the stakes-winning Denman mare Secret Trail, a $700,000 purchase for RMA Bloodstock from the Yarraman Park Stud draft at the 2019 National Broodmare Sale.

Out of a half-sister to Group 1 winner Gold Trail, Secret Trail has a yearling filly by Zoustar and missed to the Widden Stud flagbearer last year.
