Kallos Makes Triumphant Return in Rubiton Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday February 10

The high-class Medaglia d'Oro (USA) gelding Kallos earned his chance in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate after emerging from a twenty-three-week hiatus to claim the $300,000 Group II McCafe Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Ridden by Blake Shinn for James Cummings, Kalios came down the centre of the track to defeat the short-priced favourite Asfoora (Flying Artie) by a length, with the winner's stablemate  Zapateo (Brazen Beau) a long-head back in third.

With his fourth stakes success, Kallos advances his record to seven wins, two seconds, and a third from 19 starts with earnings of $797,205.

"He's had a few things wrong; we've had to put a tongue tie on him and all kinds of other gear, but it was good to see him win the way he did today," stable representative Nacim Dilmi said.

"He's been in a better mental state at this stage, had a nice training session at Osborne Park, and arrived here a few days ago. It was great to see him back in the winner's enclosure.

"The way he's done it today, it took him a while to get into gear, he was strong late, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw him again in two weeks (Oakleigh Plate).

"Zapateo ran super. She followed the favourite and narrowly missed second, but she's on the right track."

Kallos is the first foal of the Group II ATC Magic Night Stakes and Listed ATC Gimcrack Stakes winner Calliope.

The daughter of Exceed and Excel made just four career starts. She is a sister to Group III Canonbury Stakes winner Zethus.

Calliope's dam Melpomene (Elusive Quality) is a half-sister to Group III Tatt's NSW Furious Stakes winner Bound For Earth (Northern Meteor), out of the Group 1 Victoria Oaks heroine Bulla Borghese.

Kallos's stakes-placed three-quarter sister Thalia (Medaglia d'Oro) is the dam of the Group III Star Kingdom Stakes winner Bacchanalia.

Calliope has a yearling Street Boss (USA) filly named Tempted. After foaling a Pinatubo (IRE) colt in August, she visited Brazen Beau.
