Written Tycoon Colt Fury Breaks the Ice at Sandown

Mark Smith - Wednesday February 21

Team Hawkes may embark on a Sydney campaign in the autumn for the 3-year-old colt Fury after the son of Written Tycoon led at every call over the talented Shamus Award filly Quickster in Wednesday’s Sportsbet Same Race Multi Maiden Plate at Sandown-Lakeside.

Under a perfectly judged front-running ride by Jordan Childs, Fury defeated the fast-finishing favourite by a length, with the Brave Smash gelding Universal Harmony back in third.

It was a breakthrough at start four for Fury, a fast-finishing third over the course and distance on January 31.

“He jumped, relaxed and quickened off the corner. It’s a tight track and quite often a leader’s track,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said.

“He was unlucky not to win the other day and had a better run today.

“There’s a couple of (suitable) races in Sydney, and the skies the limit for him.”

Carrying the colours of Ruper Leigh, Fury was a $675,000 purchase for Hawkes Racing from the Gilgai Farm draft at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

The highest priced of the twelve Written Tycoons at the sale, Fury is the ninth winner from as many to race for the Encosta De Lago mare Soorena.

He is a half-brother to the Group 1  VRC Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback, dual Group II winner Vanilla (Philippi), and the stakes-placegetters Octane, Born a Warrior, and The Rude Warrior.

Fury is the final foal of Soorena, who died in 2020.
