Classic Goal for Sepoy's Unbeaten Anjana

Mark Smith - Saturday June 2

There's no glossing over Sepoy's slow start to his stud career in Australia, however, the least concerned about that was the Roll The Dice Syndicate who have a little star in the grey filly Anjana.

For the third consecutive time, Anjana returned to a crowded winner's circle.

After winning on debut at Wangaratta on May 7, the Darren Weir-trained filly hacked up by six lengths at Ballarat a fortnight later.

Sent off $1.40 chance to complete the hat trick in Saturday's Dominant Homecare Products Hcp (1200m) at Moonee Valley, Anjana relied on the skills of Damian Lane to extract out of a pocket on the home turn. It was an easy watch from there on as the daughter of Sepoy came three lengths clear under her 59kgs impost to defeat Goldifox (Foxwedge) with Cosmic Ruby (Skilled) a further one and a half lengths back in third. Roll The Dice's Leigh Saville praised Darren Weir for the filly's fast start to her career.

"We always thought she had a lot of ability," Saville revealed.

"She was always really speedy but wouldn't settle but Darren's worked his magic to get her to come back underneath and she really finished off today. It's very exciting."

Roll The Dice needed to shell out just $34,000 to snare Anjana from the Vierra Group draft at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

"This is where Darren, John Foote and Jeremy Rogers do all their best work. They go through every sale and look at every horse, Saville said.

"Mahuta (1.7 million earner) was $35,000 and she was $34,000 so we certainly buy value.

"She's probably going to have a couple of weeks off now and we'll set her for the Thousand Guineas and see where she goes from there."

Anjana is the fourth foal of the unraced More Than Ready (USA) mare Further who is a half-sister to Group III winner Elusive Touch (Elusive Quality) out of the smart racemare Shelbourne Lass (Brocco) whose four wins included a pair of Group III's.

Bert Vierra purchased Further off Limerick Lane for $110,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale when carrying a Snitzel colt.

Bowness Stud consigned a full-sister to Anjana to this year's Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale where she was purchased by Gordon Richards Racing for $47,500.

Further has a weanling filly by the red-hot first season sire Zoustar and was covered by Wandjina last spring.

With the star filly Alizee and the promising Marcel From Madrid keeping him in the spotlight, Sepoy is sure to be popular at his Victorian debut this spring where his fee has been set at a competitive $11,000 by Darley Stud.
