Booking could mean plenty on Day at Caulfield

Can a jockey engagement provide punters with a tip?

Trainer Mick Price thinks that could be the case with the engagement of Damien Oliver to ride Oregon's Day in the Legacy 2017 Badge Appeal Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield.

Oregon's Day was a Group III winner last time in but gets in with half a kilogram above the limit in Saturday's $100,000 contest.

"Damien Oliver is riding her at 54.5kg, if that tells you something," Price said.

"She'll have a tiny little saddle on her and I think she'll be running on well."

Oregon's Day will take a decent first-up record into the race after running second at two of her three fresh runs, including a solid effort when chasing home the smart filly Fuhryk in the Group III Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) in February.

Oregon's Day has had two jumpouts leading into Saturday's race, running third in both, at Caulfield on July 25 and August 1. Oliver was aboard Oregon's Day in her second hit-out in which she finished a half-length from the winner.

Price aid the daughter of Domesday went well early in her campaigns but would improve with racing and more ground as her preparation progressed but the likely pace of Saturday's race would help the four-year-old get into contention late.

"She's going well. She's a good filly," Price said.

"She goes well fresh and she goes well once she does a bit of racing and gets up to a mile.

"She'll get good speed on and get back a little bit and help her finish off."

Luxbet and Bet365 have Oregon's Day as a $4 chance to make a winning return to racing.
