The
practice of pin-hooking weanlings from Australian sales into the NZB Yearling Sale
Series is one that has proved very lucrative for canny investors in the past,
but with a strong Australian dollar the stakes were made much tougher this year.
That said, there were still some good results and many vendors did very well in
pin-hooking youngsters from the NZB National Weanling Sale as well, with
Savabeel (pictured) providing three of the top 10 best pinhooks.
Bruce and Maureen Harvey of Ascot Farm, did best at this caper from a vendor
perspective, selling three of the top four pinhooks.
Best return was achieved by a Savabeel colt from Dancing Brunette that was
purchased for $42,500 at the NZB Select Weanling Sale and then made $270,000 at
NZB Premier when purchased by DGR Thoroughbreds, yielding a profit of $227,500.
Not far behind in terms of profit was a Fastnet Rock colt from Snake Mary, that
was snapped up for $130,000 from the Inglis Australian Select Weanling Sale and
made $340,000 when sold by Ascot Farm to the Hong Kong Jockey Club, resulting
in a face value profit of $210,000, albeit with a readjustment for the difference
between purchase price in Aus dollars to sale price in Kiwi dollars.
Below is a list of the Top 10 Kiwi Pinhooks (Premier and Select) in terms of
profit.
