It
was a new look Manighar (Fr) that stepped out at Caulfield on Saturday, the
lightly framed grey import scoring a dominant win at his first run for Peter
Moody in the Group III MRC Carlyon Cup at 1600 metres.
A frequent flyer to our shores having run in two Melbourne Cups for Luca Cumani,
Manighar stayed on in Australia following his last start second in the Group II
MRC Zipping Classic, which came after a good fifth in the Cup behind Dunaden
(Fr).
Manighar was sans blinkers, but with the addition of a nose roll and the minor
gear changes obviously agreed with the talented son of Linamix, who travelled
well throughout for Luke Nolen and motored to the line to score a soft length and three-quarter victory,
his seventh in 23 starts.
"We came here with an open mind today, but he'd been working nicely at home,"
Moody said.
"He came to us as a genuine stayer, but as we've started to shorten and sharpen
up his work, he's started showing a turn of foot, so we thought it's not silly
to try him at a mile.
"He'll go to the Australian Cup and then The BMW, those are his two goals this
preparation."
A Group II winner in France up to 3000 metres, Manighar is a son of champion French
sire Linamix (pictured) and is a sister to French Group III winner Minatlya being one of
three winners from the US bred Rubiano mare Minty Fresh.
