The
Listed MRC Kevin Hayes Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday was won in scintillating
fashion by exciting filly Soft Sand, a $160,000 purchase from the Yarraman Park
draft at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Trained by Colin Little, Soft Sand gave notice of her potential when winning
her first two starts in explosive fashion before tasting defeat for the first
time last start when going down narrowly in an open fillies event over 1100
metres at Caulfield on Australia Day.
The daughter of leading European sire Dansili rebounded swiftly from that
experience, jumping well and settling fifth for Damien Oliver where she
travelled so well you always knew she'd be hard to beat.
Soft Sand (pictured as a yearling) let down with her trademark turn of foot at the furlong, dashing
clear of champion New Zealand filly Anabandana to win by nearly three lengths,
her overall record now three wins and a second from four starts with prizemoney
of $118,275.
"She might have been a bit soft when she was beaten the other day and even
though she's trained here she still got a bit lost on the turn that day," Colin
Little revealed.
"She had a little break in the spring and for the past six months we've been
targeting this race for her, this one and the Angus Armanasco (Group II over
1400 metres at Caulfield on February 25)."
Imported in utero, Soft Sand (pictured here with her dam in 2008) is the first foal of the Rahy mare Mizzle (USA), a
three-quarter sister to Group III Newmarket July Cup winner City On a Hill from
Group I winner Loving Claim.
The current yearling from Mizzle, a filly by Hard Spun has been entered by Yarraman
Park for the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and will be offered asLot 282.
Mizzle had a filly foal by Nicconi last spring and was covered by young
Yarraman Park based sire Hinchinbrook in his first season at stud.
