HK Stakes-Winner for Redoute's Choice

Tara Madgwick - Sunday February 12
Leading Hong Kong trainer John Moore was in the winner's circle at Sha Tin on Saturday with talented Redoute's Choice gelding Packing OK, a $480,000 Magic Millions purchase for Magus Equine from the draft of Widden Stud.

The five year-old has always shown ability and posted his first stakes win when taking out the Centenary Vase HK Gr 3 over 1800 metres with Darren Beadman in the saddle.

Packing OK (pictured) could step out in the HKG1 Citibank Hong Kong Gold Cup later this month after turning the tables on archrival Pure Champion.

Packing OK, who enjoyed a five-pound pull in the weights for finishing second to Pure Champion in the HKG3 January Cup at Happy Valley last month, repelled a late challenge from that Tony Cruz-trained rival to win by half a length in a time of 1m 49.13s.

"It was a good staying effort by Packing OK today," said Moore. "He's been well-placed and we're very happy with the result. The Lee family has been very patient with his placement and we were a little unlucky at Happy Valley last time. Today he had a great trail three back and stayed on nicely.

"He will run in the Gold Cup coming up if the Lee Family gives me the green light. I find that he's probably two or three lengths off being a Group 1 horse but trainers are often wrong and I've been wrong before - he'll probably take his chance."

Jockey Darren Beadman was pleased with the Raymond Lee Man Chun-owned five-year-old and believes the gelding could make further progress.

"He's always shown a lot of promise; from the first day he arrived here, he always gave the feeling that he'd be a Group horse," said the rider.

"He might develop into a better class stayer next season as he gets stronger."

Bred by Teeley Assets, Packing OK is by champion sire Redoute's Choice from Tasmanian Oaks winner Abbadena and has the overall record of five wins and seven placings from just 16 starts.

Packing OK is the 82nd stakes-winner for Redoute's Choice(pictured), who has five yearlings entered for the 2012 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
