Sometimes the stars align to produce the sort of results every breeder dreams of.
Having bred and sold two of the best Fastnet Rock fillies in training in Mosheen (VRC Oaks) and Drieffontein (Magic Millions 2YO Classic), not to mention last Saturday's Group III winner Psychologist, New South Wales based Bylong Park Thoroughbreds has much to look forward to over the next few months.
"To have two horses come out in the past six months and win major races like Mosheen and Driefontein have done is an amazing achievement for a small farm like ours," said Stud Manager, Sarah Clearson, who runs Bylong Park for Richard and Christine Johnston, who purchased the old Clearvale Stud in the Bylong Valley back in 2004.
"We have just 26 mares at present, so we only have small crops of foals and when you think about the bigger farms where hundreds of foals are born each year it makes you realize how lucky we've been.
"There is a lot of intensive work involved in raising these horses, but I honestly think the ground we're on has something special about it, the horses grow and develop so well."
Standard bearer Mosheen (pictured, Taron Clarke Photography) is the first foal of Sumehra (NZ), a winning half-sister to Group I HK Derby and International Mile winner Lucky Owners and stakes-winner Miss Power Bird from the family of champion racehorse Might and Power, whose many wins included Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
The Johnston's purchased Sumehra for $310,000 at the 2004 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale where she was offered by leading New Zealand nursery Cambridge Stud and while she failed to reach any heights on the racetrack, she has certainly proven her worth at stud.
Sent back to her birthplace in New Zealand for a mating with Cambridge's Stud's resident champion sire Zabeel in 2009, Sumehra delivered a colt from that exercise which will be offered as Lot 413 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
"He's been a standout since he was born and even before Mosheen started winning races, he was always my personal favourite," revealed Sarah Clearson.
"He's not a big horse, but neither is Mosheen, so I think they tend to take after their mother in that regard as she's quite a small light framed mare, although he is very correct and has loads of scope about him.
"He is a star and knows he's a star. He's just so intelligent, an outstanding colt!"
While the half-brother to Mosheen looms as the obvious standout for Bylong Park Thoroughbreds at Easter this year, he is in good company with five other lovely youngsters including a Redoute's Choice filly from Group I winning More Than Ready (USA) mare Carry on Cutie, a full brother to Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude winner Psychologist(pictured www.stevehart.com.au) (click here to read about her win on Saturday)and a Fastnet Rock filly from imported Sadler's Wells mare Ranchera (IRE).
"The Redoute's Choice filly is the spitting image of her mother, which is probably a good thing, given she won a Group 1 and the brother to Psychologist is a big strong colt that will make plenty of appeal," said Clearson.
"Ranchera hasn't made her mark yet, but this Fastnet filly (fourth foal) is really beautiful and she has the longest stride, so she might be the one to do it for her."
Rounding out the draft is a Pentire (GB) filly from Dahleah, who is a half-sister by Flying Spur to Group II winner Camena and a Tale of the Cat (USA) colt from stakes-winner Chestpeak (NZ).
As a warm up for Easter, Bylong Park will send one youngster south to the 2012 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale with a Redoute's Choice filly from Personal Service set to be offered as Lot 128.
She is the first foal for Personal Service, an unraced Zabeel half-sister to Champion 3YO Universal Prince and his Group I winning sister Universal Queen.
"She's one of only five in the sale by Redoute's Choice (pictured) and would be just about the strongest of them on pedigree," said Clearson.
"She's not a big filly, but she makes up for that in attitude as she's more than a match for any of the bigger youngsters in the paddock.
"It's funny, when you look back at the notes on Mosheen and Driefontein as yearlings and they read 'small, neat, nothing remarkable' ... that's this filly, she's a neat little package."
The breeding season at Bylong Park went smoothly last year and there are 19 foals to go on with including a half-brother to Mosheen by Flying Spur.
"I feel very privileged to be working here at this time as we have so much to look forward to both with the horses on the track and the babies coming through," Clearson added.
"Mosheen's half-brother is absolutely stunning and Carry on Cutie has the most gorgeous Fastnet Rock filly... 2013 will be a big year at the sales for us!"
