Stakes Quinella for Blackfriars

Media Release - Sunday February 19
Full Reign took the significant step from maiden grade to stakes company and did in style with a strong victory in the $80,000 Listed Challenge Stakes (1500m) at Ascot on Saturday.

A member of the Bunbury stable of Peter Giadresco, Full Reign took the first step on what connections are hoping is a Derby winning preparation in the Challenge.

The gelding, fourth on debut at Bunbury on January 12, broke his maiden status a fortnight later at the same track with a strong length and a half victory.

He came into today's race with the benefit of a trial at Lark Hill on Monday when fourth over 950 metres.

Full Reign is raced by Sophie Madrigali after being purchased on her behalf by Giadresco at the 2010 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale for $45,000 from the Durham Lodge draft.

"It was a terrific win," Madrigali said. "We gave him a good each way chance despite him going up a lot in grade.

"The little run in the trials on Monday topped him off nice and I'm so proud of him and so pleased for Peter and the boys who have turned out the horse a treat.

"It was a great ride as well from Shaun."

"The Derby path is probably what we're looking at. It's ambitious but it's nice to have a try for a change."

Only last Tuesday a full brother to Full Reign was purchased by Craig Thompson's Mt Hallowell Stud for $95,000 during the premier session of the Magic Millions Perth Yearing Sale.

"Peter is still crying that we didn't buy the full brother the other day, but I think we got the better one," Madrigali added with a chuckle.

The race result gave leading Durham Lodge based sire Blackfriars (pictured) a quinella in the feature stakes event.

Last week the Western Australia Thoroughbred Breeders honoured the sire with the state's leading stallion trophy at a presentation on the eve of the Perth Yearling Sale.

Full Reign is the third stakes performer from four to race for the 100 per cent winner producer Stop in Time.

A city winning daughter of Tenby, Stop in Time is a half sister to the Aquanita Stakes winner Exquisite Timing - another Blackfriars runner.

That makes Full Reign a full brother to Boulder Cup and Albany Cup winner Impact Rating and the group performed six time winner Black in Time. He is also a three quarter brother to afore mentioned Exquisite Timing.
