Quality Not to Be Missed

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 22

This New South Wales based vendor has arrived in Melbourne with a top quality draft of nine youngsters including a half-brother to smart stakes-winner Run for Naara, a close relation to $4,5 million earner Zipping and the first foal of a Group I winning mare.

A proven source of stakes horses such as Under the Eiffel, Chance Bye, Brightexpectations, Dubleanny, Break Card and Blue Diamond contender Cambiaso, Torryburn Stud is a familiar name to yearling buyers seeking a quality young racehorse.

Lot 248 Filly Encosta de Lago x Special Mission (NZ) – First foal of Group I New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes winner Special Mission.

Comments from Torryburn Stud Manager Reggie Mackellar - The first thought that comes to mind when you see this filly is how strong she is and what a super walk she has. This filly already has the mind of a racehorse and a good temperament to go with it.

This is the first foal out of the mare and she has a Redoute's Choice colt at foot and was covered by High Chaparral (IRE), so there is plenty of quality to follow and give her the best chance to succeed at stud.

Lot 93 Colt Henrythenavigator (USA) x Natural Woman (NZ) – Fourth foal from Group III BTC Doomben Roses winner Natural Woman.

This colt is compact and has a real toughness about him. He has good bone with plenty of substance and has a good attitude, so has been a pleasure to prepare for this sale.

Nothing has been a concern for this colt throughout the prep, so this just gives you an indication of a horse that is ready to do whatever is asked of him when he starts his next stage of education and training.

Lot 340 Filly Duke of Marmalade (IRE) x Whipping – From an unraced half-sister to dual Group I winner and $4.5 million earner Zipping.

This filly has just come to us to be prepared for the Premier sale and in the time we have had her she has continued to grow and improve. The filly is out of a staying family so she will need time, but she is put together with good scope, substance and bone.

We have the 2 year old half sister who is by Red Ransom currently spelling at the farm and she is trained by Grahame Begg. The filly is going back into work this week after a good spell and looks stronger and ready for work.

Lot 614 Colt Kheleyf (USA) x Kristopher Street (USA) – Half-brother to stakes-winners Run for Naara, On the Course, Tisket a Tasket.

This colt has come to the farm just to be prepared for this sale and in this time he has continued to grow and to furnish into a nice bodied yearling. He has plenty of good leg under him and scope, but he will need time.

Lot 41 Filly Stratum x Loulou – First foal of smart Sydney metropolitan winner Loulou from the family of Group winners Patpong and Chakvetadze.

The filly is very forward on type and has good scope, bone and depth. She is very feminine and carries herself with professionalism. A nice filly by the right sire, so buyers should be marking her down to come and inspect.

Lot 337 Colt Tale of the Cat (USA) x Watch My Lips – From a daughter of Group II winner Mardi's Magic from the family of champion miler Racing to Win.

Stamped in the mould of his sire Tale of the Cat, this colt is put together with size, strength, bone and class. He is continuing to develop into a well balanced horse and has a good loose walk.

The mare's first foal, Memphis Mafia, is now trained by Sam Pritchard-Gordon and is showing some ability with her placing in her last 2 runs, while the Snitzel colt out of the mare we sold at the Premier last year and is trained by Peter Moody is showing nice ability.

Lot 317 Filly Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) x Unconditional Love – Second foal of a metropolitan winning daughter of dual Group I winner Flitter.

There are a lot of qualities to like about this filly such as her rein and well balanced, neat conformation. She has a good walk and carries herself with elegance. A classy filly that will appeal to the buyer not only for her appearance, but also for her pedigree.

Lot 170 Filly Choisir x River Lena (IRE) – Third foal of a half-sister to Group III winner Pictavia and daughter of stakes-winner Insijaam.

This filly has been consistent in her development from the word go and I have been very impressed with how she has blossomed and come together as a young horse in this yearling preparation.

The mare River Lena has been extremely consistent in throwing nice types with her first foal being by Tiger Hill which was sold under Torryburn's draft at the Classic sales and was brought by Paul Moroney for $110,000.

Lot 96 Colt Street Sense (USA) x Nephtys – First foal of winning Redoute's Choice mare from the family of Group I winner Star Shiraz.

There is a lot to like about this colt and he has a fantastic attitude. He has continued to develop in his preparation, although time will be the key for him, given that you will see a different horse again in 12 months time.
